The Trans Fat Ban
Today, New York City’s trans fat ban goes into effect, citywide. Yesterday, Tony characterized New York City’s trans fat
ban as nothing more than nanny government.
Avella, the only Council Member to vote against the trans fat ban stated, “I am sure that the Mayor is extremely pleased with the trans fat ban that goes into effect tomorrow. However, this is just another example of Mayor Bloomberg’s nanny government. Just how far is the City going to go in dictating how we conduct our everyday lives? The trans fat issue should be one of personal responsibility and not legislation.”

I am in favor of the trans fat ban in NYC and everywhere for that matter. The general public does not have easy access to information on what restaurants are using to prepare food. If there is a standard to not use trans fat oils, it will make it much easier for the general public to trust that a restaurant is preparing foods in a healthier way. This is not about people taking personal responsibility for what they eat, but more about the community as a whole working together to create healthier cooking practices so the general public can eat out without having to analyze the oils that were used to prepare their dinner. I will eat out more because of this so you may consider it good for the economy.
I could not agree more.
To Belinda and Oliver: If it’s healthier food you want, try using your own common sense. If you want the government telling you what you can or can’t eat, move to Cuba. There you’ll get some nice, light Latin cuisine, as well as the type of government that you apparently need in your lives - a government watching over you and telling you what’s best for you. God help us.
To Mr. Avella: Thank you for taking a stand against bigger-government’s growing intrusions into our lives. Trans- or otherwise, WE can decide what type of fats go into our own stomachs. And good or bad, WE voted for term limits.
To Mayor Bloomberg: Good job, but your time is near. I like you, but I’m liking this Avella guy to take your place when you EIGHT years are finished.
